Awolowo's daughter agitates for regional autonomy

Dr. Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu has suggested that Nigeria should give autonomy to the regions in order to develop the country. The former ambassador of Nigeria to Holland said that the country must return back to the format it used in the first republic in which each region was autonomous and not depending on the federal government.  The Punch reports that the last daughter of the late HID Awolowo said state government’s dependence on the federal government for allocation was not encouraging growth and different from the vision of the founding fathers. She advised south western governors to emulate the legacy of Obafemi Awolowo by making education accessible. “It will be regrettable if the resolutions of the 2014 National Conference are abandoned because the recommendations would help us to move forward. One of the issues we need to get right is our federalism. That is first and foremost. Is this the kind of federalism that was bequeathed to our generation? I am not so sure. I believe that we will do better if, as done in the First Republic, each region is granted autonomy. I feel that the prospects of receiving allocations from the Federal Government at Abuja make people to go to sleep and not to work hard.” A few months ago,  Chief Emeka Anyaoku, the former secretary-general of the Commonwealth shared the same sentiment too that Nigeria has a lot to gain by remaining as a single entity and suggested that true federalism is the key solution to the country’s problem.

Ibadan high chief slaps Olubadan-elect’s media aide

One of the Ibadan High Chiefs and a key member of the advisory committee, Chief Olaifa reportedly slapped Adeola Oloko, the media aide to the Olubadan-elect. Leadership reports that Olaifa descended on the media aide because of a newspaper report on the details of the coronation day of the new Olubadan. Oloko was said to have sent out the report without the consent of the Olubadan Advisory Council, though he claimed to have consulted with the Olubadan-designate before going ahead to release the statement to that effect. Olaifa reportedly asked the security operatives in the palace to throw Oloko out but they did not carry out the order.  A source said: “Olaifa had told Oloko on his way into the palace to move away from the place, because he did want to see him around. But, on his way out, he saw Oloko standing at the entrance and suddenly dealt him a slap on the face.” According to the source, the chief was angry with Oloko because it was the duty of the state government to announce the coronation day, not any other person. “You all know Ajimobi for who he is. He doesn’t like anybody performing whatever he thinks is his duty. And the announcement of the coronation day by another person rattled him,” the source added. The former Olubadan passed away in the evening of January 19 and was buried on February 12. High Chief Saliu Adetunji is next in line according to Olubadan system and the Olubadan-in-Council. However, Chief Adebayo Oyediji is laying claim to the position, saying he is the next person to be installed as Olubadan and not Adetunji.
